So Black Pean is one of the two dramas that I have been watching this season — aside of Hana Nochi Hare which I think deserves its own entry.
I can finally pen down my thoughts about it after I watched its final episode today
I liked the first few episodes where the conflicts were still mysteries and the doctors were all making my blood boiled. But gearing to the last few episodes, I think I lost some of my excitements.
Nino is really great in acting that's for sure — but for me, seeing him in this complete devil role is somehow not fitting. Tokai is pretty much one dimensional and doesn't have enough layer in characters. Honestly, although it's not really apple-to-apple, I prefer his role in Yamada Tarou than this. Heck, even his Ryusei no Kizuna's character appealed more to me than Tokai's.
Story development wise — I am pretty much disappointed with the revelation of the patient's history with black pean stuck inside his chest. Sure, it has connections with how Tokai Ichiro got banished from Tojo Uni Hospital, but I don't know, I guess I was expecting a more compelling back story rather than Saeki Saigo leaving black pean there on purpose for the sake of the patient. I think I prefer Saeki-sensei to be evil all the way.
The most satisfying character for me in Black Pean is surprisingly Takashina. He evolved from a doctor who only focused on research to someone who finally realize that practical skill is also equally important for a doctor. Add to that his backstory on SNIPE with his effort to cure a little girl's long time disease. Takashina is the kind of character you hated first but grew fond of him along the story.
I guess I don't need to say this — but I dislike Sena and his character development. His purpose is I think to be Tokai's assistant and to learn from Tokai and finally become a good doctor, but the show didn't really go there and it pissed me off that they only used Sena as an assistant to show how superior Tokai is.
I can ignore other supporting roles — but who would tell me what is Nekota's deal about?! She supported Tokai and that's it? Who knows what are her real intention is?
In short — we may need season 2.
And I do hope if that happened, Tokai's character will be explored more cause we deserve that, Show!
/end of rants
